Masters of sex is definitely not a show for the squeamish, or anyone who is at an impressionable age – but it is the show for someone who enjoys a great period piece that explores the taboo nature of sex in the 1960’s.
The show is actually based off of a biography of the same name and follows William Masters and his assistant (and future ex wife) Virginia Johnson as they explore the scientific nature of sex.
Obviously, in those times, any explicit talk of sex was thought of as filth; and we see a lot of that in this show, as well as how a lot of scientific developments, surgeries, and medications came in to place today through science.
The show offers compelling writing, and even though it is based off of true events – there is still enough drama to keep any viewer interested.
Jane the virgin not only offers a witty and compelling story, but is also one of the few shows on television with a woman of color featured as the lead.
The story follows Jane Villanueve and a series of events that leads to her getting pregnant, even though she is a virgin. It’s all told by a comedic omniscient narrator in the style of a tele nova.
All of the characters are fun, and there are some great relationships already instilled into the show even though it is only on its first season.
Although it’s only on the first season, the show has already been recognized by both the People Choice Awards and the Golden Globes – winning awards for both.
izombie is a new television series based off of a comic book of the same name. It’s basically about a medical resident who is turned into a zombie after the events of a yacht party.
For me, the premise alone was enough of a reason for me to give it a shot. As someone who is a fan of the zombie genre in general, it’s interesting to see a zombie premise that is so different; and the show itself delivers with this premise.
If you’re a fan of the cult hit, Veronica Mars, you might find this especially enjoyable given that it’s developed by the same person.
The show offers light comedy, and original and interesting plot, and plenty of likable characters. Even though it has only had a four episodes in general – the show exhibits great potential for something that could be amazing.
Orphan Black is a show about, well, clones. On the surface it may seem a little too science fiction, or cheesy – but it’s actually one of the best shows on television right now. It features Tatiana Maslany, playing all of the clones – and her performance alone is enough to make it worth giving a watch.
The clones are all stark in difference and each are layered characters; sometimes it’s even hard to believe Maslany is the face behind all of them.
The show has smart writing, diversity, great female characters and an overall interesting plot.
Season 3 will be airing in two weeks time on BBC America.
